Safe Environment Requirements


Here at Sacred Heart Church we are in the process of acquiring all necessary clearances needed by our volunteers.  These clearances are needed for everyone in the parish, 14 and over who have ANY contact with children, (visual included).  This includes all clergy, as well as all parish and school employees.  Volunteers who have any possible contact with children must also obtain background checks this includes if you help with the following: prep, cyo, boy scouts, cub scouts, Holy Cross volunteers, and lambs of the Lord.  

Required Background Checks


PA State Police Criminal Record Check (Also referred to as PA State Police Clearance)

  • It is free to all volunteers  
  • Must be updated every 5 years. 
  • This background check can be obtained online.  
  • Please go to this website, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, to obtain your clearance immediately online. (This is also referred to as PA State Police Clearance.)

PA Department Human Services Child Abuse History Check (Also referred to as PA Child Abuse History Check)

  • This clearance is free to all volunteers 
  • This clearance must be updated every 3 years.  
  • Applicants will receive their results more quickly if they submit via online
  • Print out their results and attach a copy of the results to the PA State Police Crminal Record Check
  • Please go to this website, PA Child Abuse Clearance Check.  
  • Please note that this website takes you into a Child Welfare Portal.  If you have never logged in before, you'll need to create an "Individual Login".  It will then re-direct you to login with your new login information.

Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance

  • The following FBI Criminal Background Check must be obtained by volunteers living in PA for LESS than 10 years:
    • Go to here to schedule an appointment for a background check.
    • Go to here to find fingerprint locations.
      • In order to schedule an appointment you will need a service code:
            For all current and/or prospective PARISH and other staff/volunteers 
        • 1KG738 for Child Care Services/Program Employee and/or Contractors 18 and over. 
        • 1KG756 for Employees 14-17 year olds that have contact with children
        • 1KG6ZJ for Volunteers.
          For all current and/or prospective SCHOOL employees/volunteers
        • 1KG6TR is the code for (PDE) Pennsylvania Department of Education (non-public schools) 
        • If you don’t fall under any of the above categories you will need to contact (DHS) Department of Human Services to determine the appropriate code you should use at 717-783-6211.
      • After above code is entered you should then click on Schedule or Manage Appointment and enter the required information.

Archdiocesan Safe Environment Training

Volunteers who reside in Pennsylvania do not have a provisional period and must obtain clearances prior to beginning service. 

Volunteers who reside in another state or country may serve for no more than 30 days as long as they provide clearances from their state or country of residence.

Volunteers who have regular contact with children (at least one time per week) are required to complete parts one and two of the Safe Environment training within 90 days of beginning their volunteer work.

  • Part I: Protecting God's Children, is offered regularly at sites throughout the Archdiocese. The training provides basic facts about child sexual abuse and adults’ roles in prevention. This is a one-time, no-fee,  3hr training session held at various parishes throughout the archdiocese. Register here - Virtusonline
  • Part II: The Mandatory Reporting of Suspected Child Abuse, is available online at our Training Institute in English and Spanish. This training provides an overview of Archdiocesan reporting procedures for suspected child abuse and Pennsylvania Child Welfare Laws. The training should take you approximately one hour to complete. This is no-fee and one-time only. Register here

  • Review of the Technology Addendum

    The Technology Addendum addresses the use of technology when serving children in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. This addendum became policy on July 1, 2011 and is now a part of our Safe Environment training. If you took the training previous to 7/2011: Please Click Here and complete the review, you can either email the results or send it in by mail.  This is one-time only and only if you took the Safe Environment training before July 1, 2011, otherwise this is already contained in the current training.
